Missed It

Last Friday I missed one of those rare moments that will happen in parenting. Let me set the stage for you.

I got home from work Friday afternoon just after 5. The house that was very quiet except for the Barbie princess movie that is playing. Nothing out of the ordinary to have a family sleeping when I get home. I was rounding the corner to head down the hall to tell Roger I'm home when out from behind the table there pops up this really cute blonde. Here's our conversation that ensued.

"HI Mommy. I'm Painting."

"Really??? Where's Daddy?"

"He's in Bed sleeping?"

"Does he know you're painting?"

"No! I got the paint by myself. I'm a big girl."

"Oh Really!"

And it's at this point that I missed it. I should have run for the video camera and captured this moment. I should have narrated the whole event, walked down the hall with the video camera and captured forever Roger's reaction to finding out that Karys was painting. Poor guy worked 65 hours last week and was just exhausted and needed some sleep.

I should have taken video of her hands covered in paint, as well as our table. The trail of water spilled all over the kitchen floor and carpet leading to her "work space." The little white chair set up at the sink where she helped herself to a cup and water. The towel lying next to the sink drenched. (I'm not exactly sure what she used it to dry up because there was still water everywhere.)

I'm now kicking myself for being so reactive and more concerned about cleaning up a mess than preserving a sweet memory. Roger told me the other day that I'm living life too hurried. I think maybe he's right. (Yes, I just said my husband is right. He's a very smart man, just don't tell him ;).
So from now on I'm gonna try to slow down. I'm gonna be ready to capture the special moments that will all too soon be gone. I don't want to miss anything!
